On September 4th,  2012, Oxfam GB, in partnership with the Asian Knowledge Institute, held the second Development Conversation Series in Bangkok, Thailand. Under the theme of “We are the solution: how active citizens can bring real solutions to development” experts and students alike connected, inspired, and learned from one another in town hall style discussions.

The event aimed to promote multi-disciplinary discussions across diverse sectors. Invitees were thus chosen from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector. Among the notable speakers were Mr. Apirak Gosayodhin (former governor of Bangkok), Mr. Samruay Padpol (Ashoka Fellow and civil society leader in Nan province), Ms. Ada Chirapaisarnkul (founder of the Thai Young Philanthropists Network), and Mr. Perapong Klinla-or (Vice President of the CSR Office at DTAC).

The discussions were fruitful and touched on the key topics including conceptualizing active citizenship within the Thai context, how the population can best self-organize using 21st century social media tools, sustainable development in rural and urban communities, and how the private sector can best contribute to social accountability.
